What Keywords Should You Use For Your Niche?
By Mike Griffith
Choosing the right keyword for your niche, whatever it might be, is vital to the success of your article marketing campaign. But how do you know which keywords are right for you? And how do you go about finding them?
The first thing you have to do ensure you have the most effective keyword is keyword research.
You don't have to be an expert to do keyword research. Keyword research simply means finding the words that will rank your web site and put your site heads and shoulders above the others.
Here's a brief outline of how to conduct keyword research for your niche website. (If you're new to niche marketing, read this).
1. Generate a list of keywords. Try to put yourself in your readers' shoes. If you were looking for your own content, what words would you use. Use a notebook or spreadsheet to record these words, and keep them for future editing. Multiple word phrases, or long tail keywords, work best because they narrow your niche audience and tend to rank better with the search engines. You can get some good ideas with Google's keyword tool.
2. Survey your clients. If you already have prospects or clients, ask them how they found you. If they found you online, ask them which keywords they used to get to your site. This will help you answer the question of "what keywords should you use" for maximum search engine traffic.
3. Use keyword software. Keyword tools can be very beneficial after you have built your list of keywords. The right software will tell you whether or not your keyword is worth pursuing before you spend your time doing extensive research.
Some keyword research software will even tell you your keyword's rank, who is ranking on Google's front page with your keyword, your competition's page rank, and number of links pointing to their page -- all at the push of a button -- and all on one page. You can even find out whether or not the competition optimized their web page content.
4. Analyze your information. Take your list and narrow it down to only the keywords that you can use the get the best results. Then rank them in order from best to worst. I usually narrow my list to the top 30 keywords for each niche.
5. Test your keywords. Keep track of which words you use in your articles and which ones performed best. The right website software will help you with traffic and competition data.
Now get ready. If you already use web content and it's not working out well for you, there are many ways to improve it. Using the right keywords is one of those ways that will help you decide which keywords to use.
